Hello, it’s me. 🗣️

Our bodies are a mystery.

And we’ve always thought we could ‘burn’ fat off. But it turns out that cells have different lifespans. For example, red blood cells can live for 4 months; liver cells can stay more than a year; bone cells likely a decade, and muscle cells, or myocytes, can stay in your body for up to 15 years! 👴

The champion, however, goes to the fat cells. 👑 Technically, your fat cells renew every 25 years or so. We know fitness is a huge thing. We all gotta be pretty. We’re sorry. But the truth is, you can’t really shed them off yet. We all need some fat. It is part of how we sustain our health. Even if you tried to burn your fat away, it’s actually still there.

Frustrated? Fact is, the number of fat cells in your body is fixed around age 15. They might change in size, but never really go away. (unless you cheat by doing surgery) We gotta say they’re actually pretty loyal to you.

They’re in for the long haul and trying to serve the best for your health. You’d actually feel better if you start giving ‘fat’ some credit and embrace it. You’re welcome, we just discovered an official reason for you to give up that gym membership. (We know you hardly ever used it anyway!)

Again, we should stress out it’s the number of fat cells that barely change after we become grown-ass adults. In other words, the sizes of fat cells determine how fit our bodies become.

Interestingly, before we turn into adults, it’s common to experience ‘pretend’ fat. Some young people might get fat easier due to the increasing amount of fat cells before the number’s fixed. What’s even worse is some people still have fat cell numbers growing when they’re already grown-up.

On the other hand, some cells never change in number and last until you die — for example, cardiomyocytes (cells that make up the heart muscle) and nerve cells. Fat cells stick with you till the end, but they’re not that special. They’re just too good at showing off on the outside.
