Stop saying, “It’s raining cats and dogs.”

☔🙀 If you must know, the origins can be traced back to the 17th century, while “cats and dogs” come even farther back from a Greek expression. As wild as it sounds, the legit story (and best guess) is the old world was really bad at designing sewage systems in cities. So whenever there was a pour, dead cats and dogs would flood the streets. And the rest is people making comments, imagining they all fell from the sky.

Alright, we know you’re probably not here for history. Why not check out some alternative sayings from around the world? (roughly translated for your pleasure)
🇩🇪Germany: “It’s raining puppies”
🇫🇷France: “It’s raining cow piss”
🇫🇮Finland: “God is taking a shit (and leak)”
🇵🇹Portugal: “It’s raining snakes and lizards” OR “It’s raining daggers”

And you thought it stops here? Scroll down for more advanced ones.
🇳🇱Netherlands: “It’s raining smoking pipes”
🇩🇰Denmark: “It’s raining little shoe makers”
🇳🇴Norway: “It’s raining Mama goblins (Baba Yaga)”
🇿🇦South Africa: “It’s raining grannies with bats”

🤷‍♂️ Hold on for a second. We could go on forever, but we’d regret it without mentioning Colombia 🇨🇴 right now. In Colombia, a heavy pour is said to be described as “raining husbands.” Whoa. There must be too many guys on the streets. All the single ladies, you know where you should check out next.

This is what Colombia looks like, apparently. Artwork by Incrediville

Another explanation for using “cats and dogs” can be traced back to the word — catadupe. In old English, it meant a cataract or waterfall. The same word also appeared in many ancient languages. In Latin, for example, it became “catadupa.”

Honestly, we think it was just someone mumbling the word and made it sound like “cat and dog.”
